Vieira and Gibson Earn MASCAC Track & Field Weekly Accolades

WORCESTER, Mass. – Worcester State University’s sophomore Marcus Vieira (Peabody, Mass.) and freshman Jalil Gibson (Lynn, Mass.) each earned Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) track & field player of the week accolades following top performances at the MASCAC/Alliance meet on Saturday.

Vieira was tabbed the MASCAC Field Athlete of the Week after earning his first MASCAC medal with a top showing in the weight throw (17.93m) at the MASCAC/Alliance Indoor Track & Field Championships to help lead the Lancers to the team title.

“Marcus had a career throw that came at the right time,”  said head coach Al Halper.  “He has been a team leader all season long and has worked hard to achieve the goals he set for himself this year. He now is the MASCAC champion, the school record holder, and hopefully on his way to nationals at the end of the season. Not bad for only being in his sophomore year.”

“We still have four weeks to go to NCAA’s so he's not done yet,” said Halper.  Vieira currently is ranked sixth nationally in the event.

Gibson earned the MASCAC Rookie of the Week award following a first place finish in the 55 meter dash in a time of 6.56 seconds, also helping the Lancers to the team title.

“Jalil has been one of the top sprinters in the D3 New England rankings since his arrival here,” commented Halper.  “We knew that he could be an important addition to the team this year.  He had his best race of the season at his most important opportunity and got the win as a freshman.”

“He is still learning and that is exciting for his future,” said Halper.  “He can only get better with time and experience. As impressive as he has been, his future should be even more productive.”
