WORCESTER, Mass. – Worcester State University’s Edward Boamah (Worcester, Mass.) and Sam Weeks (Methuen, Mass.) swept the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) weekly awards for the week of Apr. 24-30 as they both had outstanding performances this past weekend, leading their team to its third MASCAC outdoor championship, and its first-ever Alliance Championship.
Boamah captured both the MASCAC track and rookie athlete of the week award for being a dual champion in the 200 meter dash (21.90) and the 400 meter dash (57.78).
“Eddie had the kind of day we have been waiting for all year,” said head coach Al Halper. “While he has some impressive outings in his rookie year, nothing has been as impressive as his accomplishments this past weekend.”
He not only won both events, but he also set a new MASCAC and Alliance record in the 400 meter dash. With this marking, he currently stands at 6th nationally in the 400 meter.
“He did what needed to be done on the right day, at the right time and as a freshman, he engrained his name in the Lancer record books for some time to come,” stated Halper. “He broke the 400 meter record of Stanley Egbor who is an All-American and Hall of Famer at Worcester State. If he can remain focused and train with the same purpose as he did getting ready for MASCACs moving forward, it will be a fun next three years for Eddie and his teammates.”
Earning the MASCAC field athlete of the week award, was Weeks, who also was a two-time MASCAC/Alliance champion, in the shot put (16.41m) and the discus throw (49.35m).
“As a senior, Sam has been our most dominant and consistent thrower throughout the year,” said Halper. “MASCACs was no different.”
“Sam is ranked in three events nationally and also close to breaking the school record in the discus and possibly the hammer,” mentioned Halper. “He has inspired not only the other throwers on the team, but also the rest of the team as they all respect him for his athletic ability, leadership and friendly demeanor.”
Sam's efforts alone, in three events, produced 28 points towards the Lancers’ championship total. “He is a well deserving recipient of the award, any time he gets the honor,” concluded Halper.
