Berkel Tabbed MASCAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

WORCESTER, Mass. –  Sophomore forward, Kaitlyn Berkel (Waterford, Conn.) has been named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Player of the Week, as announced by the conference Monday (Jan. 9) afternoon.

Berkel averaged a double-double of 18.5 points and 10 rebounds with 2.5 blocks and 2.5 steals while shooting 55% (16-29) from the field in a 2-0 week for the Lancers.

“KB has been playing well since the return from break,” commented head coach Karen Tessmer. “She had two solid games in Spain and has continued into the start of MASCAC competition.”

Berkel tallied 17 points and 10 rebounds with three blocks in the 63-54 win over MCLA and then scored a team-high 20 points and 10 rebounds in the 63-56 win over Salem State on Saturday.

“She is taking it strong to the basket, hitting her open shots, and creating opportunities for others,” said Tessmer. “Her size and versatility make her a tough player to defend.”

While Berkel has been noted for her offensive performance, her defense has also shined. “She has been active on defense, shutting down her opponent and anticipating passes,” added Tessmer.

The Lancers resume play today (Jan. 9) when they travel to UMass Dartmouth for a 6 p.m. tipoff, before returning home to host a “Math Madness” basketball game versus No. 1 Tufts University on Wednesday (Jan. 11) at 12 noon.
