Sweeney Earns Second-Consecutive MASCAC Rookie of the Week Award

WORCESTER, Mass. – Worcester State University’s freshman forward Catherine Sweeney (Lowell, Mass.) earned her second-consecutive Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) women’s basketball rookie of the week award, as announced by the conference Monday afternoon.

The rookie averaged 10 points, eight rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 blocks in a 2-0 week for the Lancers.

"Catherine has been the difference maker in our last couple games,” commented head coach Karen Tessmer.  “Her toughness on the boards and strong drives have come at key points in the game and have helped us in our wins.”

She picked up six points and six rebounds in the win over Fitchburg State and then marked a career-high 14 points and 10 rebounds for her first collegiate double-double in the 70-62 win over Bridgewater State.

“She is gaining valuable experience and is playing more like a veteran player than a freshman,"  said Tessmer.

Next up, the women’s basketball team will host Framingham State on Wednesday (Feb. 15) before concluding the regular season on the road Saturday (Feb. 18) at Westfield State.
