Lancers Claim Three WACBA Weekly Awards

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University men's and women's basketball teams combined to take three of a possible four Worcester Area College Basketball Association weekly awards this week, as announced Tuesday morning by Matt Noonan of NoontimeSports.com.

Worcester State swept the awards on the women's side, as senior Kaitlyn Berkel (Waterford, Conn.) was named WACBA Player of the week, and freshman Calli Korbey (Hopkinton, Mass.) was named WACBA Rookie of the Week. Freshman Eddie Hassell (Milton, Mass.) was named the WACBA Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week to round out the awards for the Lancers.

Berkel led the Lancers to a victory over Springfield in their final contest of the fall semester last Tuesday evening. Berkel put up 19 points on 7-for-13 shooting to go along with 10 rebounds, three assists, and a steal in the win. On Monday, she received her second MASCAC Player of the Week award, and she was previously named the WACBA Player of the Week on November 13.

Korbey earns her second consecutive WACBA Rookie of the Week honor after a solid outing last Tuesday evening to lift the Lancers to a 68-60 win over Springfield to close out the fall semester. The freshman put up 10 points, knocking down a pair of threes, while grabbing two assists and a steal in the victory.

Hassell's impressive run continued this week after he was named WACBA Rookie of the Week for the third consecutive week and fourth time overall. Also the five-time reigning MASCAC Rookie of the Week, Hassell helped lift the Lancers to a 74-71 win over Becker last week scoring 11 points in just 23 minutes, while recording three rebounds, two blocks, and a steal in the win.

Both basketball teams are both off until after the Christmas holiday, as the men next play against Wentworth at the Clark Holiday Tournament on December 29. The women's team is next in action in California, playing UC Santa Cruz on New Year's Eve.
