Carens and Maldonado Take Home MASCAC Weekly Honors

WESTFIELD, Mass. - Worcester State University student-athletes won two Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards brought to you by GEICO. The conference office announced on Monday afternoon that Emily Carens (Northborough, Mass.) and Ali Maldonado (Rutland, Mass.) have won their first Player of the Week awards of the season.

Carens, of the Lancer volleyball team, averaged 10.25 kills and eight digs with a .295 hitting percentage while adding seven assists, three service aces and two block assists in a 4-0 week for the Lancers. She registered a season-high 14 kills with a .440 hitting percentage, 11 digs, four assists and two service aces in the 3-0 win over Lasell College. Carens also collected six kills, seven digs, an assist and service ace in the 3-0 win over Westfield State. She rounded out her week with 15 kills, seven digs and two block assists in the 3-1 win over Western New England University.

Maldonado tallied four goals for eight points in a 2-1 week for the Lancers women’s soccer program. The sophomore forward netted her first goal of the week in a 2-1 win over Becker College, before recording a hat trick in the conference-opening 5-1 win over MCLA on Saturday.

Carens and the women’s volleyball team play next at home against Keene State on Tuesday evening. Maldonado and the Lancers’ women’s soccer team also play on Tuesday with a home game against Gordon.
