Carens, Maldonando Receive MASCAC Player of the Week Awards

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Two Worcester State University student-athletes won Player of the Week Honors from the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference brought to you by GEICO. Emily Carens (Northborough, Mass.) of the women’s volleyball team and Ali Maldonado (Rutland, Mass.) of the women’s soccer team were honored this week for their performances.

Carens averaged 11.75 kills, 13.75 digs with three block assists and a .242 hitting percentage in a 3-1 week for the Lancers. She had 12 kills with a .409 hitting percentage, 13 digs and a service ace in the 3-0 win over Bridgewater State. Carens collected 13 kills, including the 1,000th of her career, with 15 digs and a block assist in the 3-0 setback to Brandeis University. She then added nine kills, 15 digs and a block assist in the 3-0 win over Wheaton College (Mass.) and ended the week with 13 kills, 12 digs and a block assist in the 3-1 win over Plymouth State University.

Maldonado tallied a goal and an assist in the Lancers’ 3-2 overtime win over Framingham State. Her goal was a game-winner that came early in the first overtime on a free kick from 35 yards out to help the Lancers remain undefeated in league play.

Carens and the Lancers’ volleyball team play next on Tuesday, October 23 at Anna Maria starting at 7 p.m. Maldonado and the women’s soccer team travel to UMass Dartmouth on Thursday, October 25 kicking off at 7 p.m.
