Worcester State Grabs Five MASCAC Weekly Awards

WESTFIELD, Mass. - For the second consecutive week, Worcester State University Athletics claimed five weekly awards from the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference on Monday, brought to you by GEICO.

Freshman Ryann Molinari (Grafton, Mass.) was named MASCAC Women's Indoor Track & Field Rookie of the Week, while sophomore John Ojukwu (Stow, Mass.) was named MASCAC Men's Indoor Track & Field Track Athlete of the Week. Men's ice hockey swept the conference's weekly awards, with Nick Patullo (Doylestown, Pa.) winning Player of the Week and Evan Schieber (Macon, Ga.) winning Rookie of the Week. Senior Marcus Vieira (Peabody, Mass.) capped off the awards by winning men's indoor track & field Field Athlete of the Week.

Molinari participated in Worcester State’s 4x800m relay on Saturday that set a school record while coming in 16th place overall with a time of 10:03.69 at the New England Championships. The old school record, which had stood for eight years, was beaten by seven seconds.

Ojukwu won the New England Championship in the 60m dash last weekend with a time of 6.95. Ojukwu is the 15th Lancer to win a New England individual championship in indoor track, and his 6.95 second sprint is the second fastest time in New England all season.

Patullo had a massive week for the Lancers with four goals and four assists for eight points. He totaled two goals and two assists in Lancers’ final two regular season contests on Tuesday and Wednesday to help the Lancers secure a first round home game. Patullo also added two goals and two assists and won 15 of 21 faceoffs in Worcester State’s first round win over Fitchburg State on Saturday.

Schieber scored three goals and an assist last week as the Lancers closed out the regular season. He scored a goal and an assist against Fitchburg State on Tuesday and scored two goals on Wednesday against Framingham State to help the Lancers secure a first round home game. In both contests, Schieber netted the game-winning goal.

Vieira had a pair of top-seven finishes at this weekend’s New England Championships. Vieira came in third in the weight throw with a heave of 18.01m (60’7.25”) and in seventh in the shot put at 14.31m (46’11.5”).
