Three Lancers Claim MASCAC Weekly Awards

WESTFIELD, Mass. - Three Worcester State University student-athletes earned weekly honors as announced by the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference on Monday. Marcus Vieira (Peabody, Mass.) of the men’s indoor track and field team won Field Athlete of the Week brought to you by GEICO and Eddie Hassell (Milton, Mass.) of the men’s basketball team and Calli Korbey (Hopkinton, Mass.) of the women’s basketball team both won the Rookie of the Week award.

Vieira finished first in the weight throw with a distance of 17.97 meters and placed third in the shot put with a top throw of 14.45 meters in the shot put at the UMass Boston Indoor Open. He is currently ranked second in the weight throw and 15th in the shot put in Division III.

Hassell averaged seven points, four rebounds and a block in a 2-0 week for the Lancers. Off the bench, he tallied eight points, four rebounds and a block in the 76-53 win over Lasell College. He then added six points, four rebounds, a steal and assist in the 76-72 win over Connecticut College.

Korbey averaged 11.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, two assists and 0.5 steals in a 1-1 week for the Lancers. She collected 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and a steal in the 66-58 win over Keene State College and had five points and three rebounds in the 61-46 setback to Connecticut College.

Next up for Vieira and the indoor track and field team is the Tufts Invitational on Saturday, January 12 at the Gantcher Center in Medford, Massachusetts. Hassell and the men’s basketball team will play at Skidmore College on Wednesday, December 5, tipping off at 6 p.m. Korbey and the women’s team are off until December 11 when they play at Springfield with a game time of 5:30 p.m.
