Field Hockey & Women's Soccer Each Earn Conference Weekly Honors

WORCESTER, Mass. - Three Worcester State University student-athletes have received weekly recognition from their respective conferences. The announcements came from the Little East Conference and Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference on Monday afternoon.

Sophomore Ann Maher (Mansfield, Mass.) has been named Little East field hockey Defensive Player of the Week. Maher recorded a defensive save in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s 7-0 victory over UMass Dartmouth to preserve a shutout for the Lancers in their conference opener.

Field hockey senior forward Sophia Monopoli (Worcester, Mass.) earned the LEC Offensive Player of the Week award for her stellar two-game effort. Monopoli scored a goal and an assist in last Thursday’s loss to Springfield as well as two goals in Worcester State’s win over UMass Dartmouth. Monopoli currently has five goals and three assists for a total of 13 points on the season.

Freshman Haley Mignon (Tewksbury, Mass.) became the first Worcester State women's soccer player to earn a weekly award from the MASCAC this season as she was named the conference's Rookie of the Week on Monday. Mignon scored a pair of goals as Worcester State earned its first win of the season on Thursday, defeating Becker 4-0.

Monopoli, Maher, and the rest of the field hockey team will be back in action on Wednesday evening for a non-conference battle against Connecticut College at 7 p.m. at Coughlin Field. Mignon's women's soccer team travels to Gordon on Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
