Men's and Women's Soccer Each Earn MASCAC Weekly Awards

WESTFIELD, Mass. - Members of the Worcester State University men's and women's soccer teams have each earned weekly honors from the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference. The announcements came from the conference office on Monday afternoon.

Men's soccer senior Ethan Melia (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was named MASCAC Player of the week after he recorded four goals and an assist in a pair of Worcester State wins last week, including a come-from-behind MASCAC victory over Fitchburg State on Saturday afternoon. Melia scored two goals and an assist in a win over Elms on Wednesday, before scoring the tying and winning goals in the win over Fitchburg State.

The award is Melia's first MASCAC weekly award of the season, and marks the men's soccer team's second consecutive week winning the honor, as Laszlo Dorogi (West Boylston, Mass.) earned the award last week.

Women's soccer freshman Haley Mignon (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored a pair of goals in the Lancers' lone contest of the week, a 4-1 MASCAC win over Fitchburg State on Saturday, to earn conference Rookie of the Week honors. One of Mignon's tallies in the match was the game-winning goal, breaking a 1-1 tie in the opening minutes of the second half en route to the victory.

It is the second time this season Mignon has been named MASCAC Rookie of the Week, as she also accomplished the feat on September 16.

The men's soccer team will be back in action on Wednesday for non-conference battle with MIT. Women's soccer is off until Saturday, when the Lancers host Westfield State.
