WORCESTER, Mass. - Worcester State maintains the most points in the second round of the Howard C. Smith Cup standings. The Smith Cup is awarded annually to the member institution which compiles the most points based on the placement of each of its programs competing in the 15 league championship sports.
The Smith Cup is named in honor of former Massachusetts State College Trustee Howard C. Smith, who in 1970, urged the athletic directors of the eight State institutions to hold a series of meetings to discuss the possibility of forming an intercollegiate conference. In June of 1971, Smith's dream became a reality as an affirmative agreement was reached and the MASCAC was created.
Holding on to the top spot, the Lancers have 82.67 points (73.81 percent) out of 112 points. During the winter season, they finished second in men's ice hockey and tied for third in women's basketball.
Staying in second with 73.50 points (65.63 percent) out of 112 possible points is Westfield State. The Owls ended the winter regular season first in women's basketball, third in men's ice hockey and fifth in men's basketball.
Moving into third is Bridgewater State with 55.50 points (55.50 percent) out of 100 available points. The Bears finished second in men's basketball and tied for third in women's basketball. Salem State also jumps a spot from fifth to fourth with 45 points (53.57 percent) out of 84 points. The Vikings were top of the men's basketball regular season standings, fourth in men's ice hockey and fifth in women's basketball.
Grabbing the fifth slot is Framingham State with 59.17 points (52.83 percent) out of 112 available points. The Rams finished second in women's basketball, fifth in men's ice hockey and tied for sixth in men's basketball Fitchburg State earned 54.50 points (48.66 percent) out of 112 possible points. The Falcons finished atop the men's ice hockey standings, tied for third in men's basketball and sixth for women's basketball.
Closing out the fall standings are MCLA and Massachusetts Maritime in seventh and eighth, respectively. The Trailblazers netted 25 points (32.89 percent) out of 76 possible points. They finished tied for third in men's basketball and seventh in women's basketball. The Buccaneers collected 20.67 points (32.29 percent) out of 64 possible points. They do not compete in winter sports.
