While he was a student athlete at Worcester State College, Alan Pettway distinguished himself in basketball. He has the singular distinction to be the college's all time leading scorer in basketball with 2,205 career points. He was a four year starter and served as captain of the Lancer team in his senior year. To this day, he still holds eight college records in basketball and a school record of 232 three-pointers.

The team was 64-44 during Alan Pettway's four years. The Lancers competed in the ECAC Tournament in 1992-93 and the NCAA National Tournament in 1993-94. Alan Pettway was named Massachusetts State College Conference All Star for three straight years and was named second team All New England All Star twice.
