John Meany has been a member of the Worcester State Department of Athletics and Wellness since the summer of 2003, and has served in his current role as Deputy Director of Athletics since 2013. Meany oversees the Wellness Center staff, six Lancer intercollegiate teams, and assists in planning, organizing, and directing all of Worcester State’s 20 intercollegiate athletic programs. Most recently, he has been tasked with overseeing the University’s athletic facilities, primarily focusing on the planning and development of policies, procedures, programs and budgets for the new $52.6 million, 101,000 square foot Wellness Center which opened in the fall of 2016. 

Meany began his athletic journey in 2001 when he interned in the Department of Athletics at Bridgewater State University. After completing a two year stint at BSU, Meany landed at Worcester State University in the summer of 2003 being hired as the department’s Sports Information Director.  He was responsible for the modernizing of the sports information department transitioning many of the processes into the digital age.  Additionally, he was responsible for compiling in-game and team statistics, authoring game summary press releases, maintenance of the athletic department’s website, as well as managing home intercollegiate events.

Meany relinquished his media related duties in 2008 when he was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Administration and Student Support where he maintained his a role with the Sports Information Office overseeing the SID.  In his new role, he took a more active role in the planning, organizing, and directing of Worcester State’s athletic program. He prepared and coordinated annual schedules and contracts for intercollegiate along with assisting with facilities and brand management.  Meany also undertook the creation of the department’s annual budget submission.  In addition, he also served as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee advisor for several years helping Lancer student-athletes forge relationships and community service opportunities with Special Olympics and Sherry’s House.

In January of 2013, Meany was promoted to Senior Associate Athletic Director taking on the day-to-day lead of the department.  That fall, he was appointed to the Interim Director of Athletics position.

Meany is one of the most versatile employees within the athletic department, but also places a high premium on being a member of the campus community.  Meany has served on numerous campus-wide committees including: President’s Administrative Council, Enrollment Management Team, Incident Management Team, Strategic Plan Subcommittee. He has also served as a Judicial Appeal Hearing Officer and served on multiple campus employment search committees.  Off campus, he has served in NCAA governance as a member of the Division III Interpretations and Legislation committee.  He has also been a member of the NCAA New England Regional Advisory Committee and ECAC New England baseball selection committee and served on numerous Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) committees including the MASCAC’s strategic planning committee, scheduling committee and search committee for the conference’s first full-time media relations director.

Meany is a graduate of Middlebury College where he received a degree in Sociology and was a two-year starter for the football team.  He recently received a Master’s Degree from Worcester State in Non-Profit Management.

Meany and his wife Jessica, have three children and reside in Holden.
