Intramural Volleyball

Each player must present a valid WSU student ID before each contest to be eligible to participate - No Exceptions.

Intramural volleyball follows the same guidelines as intercollegiate volleyball. Such violations as carrying the ball, touching or going under the net or hitting the ball before it crosses the plane of the net when not on its way over the net should be called only if they are obvious and give the violating team a distinct advantage if overlooked.

NUMBER OF PLAYERS/SUBSTITUTIONS: Intramural volleyball is played with six (6) players on a side. Players rotate in a clockwise fashion every time their team regains the serve so that players are not assigned the same position throughout the game. Teams may play with no less than 4 players. Substitutions may only be made for the person who is just about to serve after his/her team regains the serve. In case of injury, a substitute may be brought in at any time. The original order of players on the court must be preserved throughout the game. It can only be altered through substitutions. Substitutions are unlimited.

FORFEITS: Teams will be given a 10 minute grace period before the game will be counted as a forfeit and the match will be scored 2-0 in favor of the full team present. Service will be decided by a coin flip, with 1st service in the next game going to the other team. If there is a third game, there will be another coin flip to decide who will serve.

MATCHES: Each match consists of three, 25-point games – a game must be won by a two-point margin. Rally scoring is used (every serve has a point). After each game, the teams should switch sides. The team that wins the best-out-of-three games wins the match.

SERVING: To serve, a player must be standing behind the baseline. The ball is then struck with the hand so that it travels over the net. In Rally Scoring, the ball may hit the net on a serve and still be in play if it goes over.

NUMBER OF HITS/BLOCKING: A team is allowed to hit the ball only three times in a row. If it takes a fourth hit to get the ball over the net, it is a violation. The same player may not hit the ball twice in succession, unless the first contact was a block. A block is not considered a hit. Therefore, a team may block the ball; have the same person who blocked the ball hit it again right away, then take two more hits to get the ball over the net without committing a violation.

PATH OF THE BALL: The ball must pass over the net within the boundary of the net itself. Unfortunately we do not have antenna on the nets to mark this boundary, so if the ball clearly travels wide of the net, call it a violation. If it is a close call, play the ball. It is a violation if the ball travels outside the boundary of the net even though it may come down in-bounds. If the ball should hit any object around the court, such as the pole, the ball is out-of-bounds.

SPORTSMANSHIP: Any unsportsmanlike conduct including, but not limited to, arguments with officials by any player, flagrant fouling, fighting, etc. will result in expulsion of that individual and/or team from further participation in that scheduled game. Officials/supervisors have the authority to impose penalties for teams behaving in an unsportsmanlike manner. Team captains are responsible for making sure that all members of their teams are aware of all Intramural Sports policies and rules.
