Worcester State University Student-Athlete Life Skills

NCAA Life Skills is collaboration between the NCAA and member institutions that are committed to the total development of student athletes, preparing them with “life skills” that are useful throughout the college experience and after graduation. NCAA Life Skills philosophy stemmed from the belief that excellence is a result of a balanced life including academic achievement, athletic success, and personal well-being.  Core values that life skills bring to student-athletes. 

Worcester State Lancers Student-Athlete Life Skills is coordinated out of the Office of Health Promotion by Jen Quinn, Team Leader with representation from Athletics, Kelly Downs, Jess Meany; Residence Life, Carrie Stevens and The Office of Student Conduct, Josh Katz. For the last three years this group has been working to develop a comprehensive Life Skills program and have worked hard to make it grow. 

 

Worcester State student-athlete life skills programming into broken down into three categories:

Athlete Orientation:  Athlete orientation is mandatory for all student athletes. This year’s orientation included the following life skills topics:  Alcohol Education, Leadership/Personality, Etiquette/Social Media, Diversity/Inclusion, and Title IX. 

 

Student Athlete Life Skills Program:  SA Life Skills programs are programs or events that are hosted for all student-athletes.  This year’s Life Skills programs includes the following events:

Sept. 19th -    Chris Herren, Speaker and former Boston Celtics player who shares his story of struggles with substance abuse.  7:00 - 8:15, Wellness Center

Nov. 28th   -   Frank Nash, WSC Alumnus, Best Selling Author and International Speaker/Personality.  Frank Nash is one of the most in-demand and exciting coaches, writers and presenters in the Fitness industry today.  7:00 – 8:15, Science & Tech Lecture Hall 102

Feb.15th - Kevin Hines, Speaker and Mental Health advocate who shares his story of his unlikely survival and will to live w/bi-polar disorder.  11:30 -12:30, Blue Lounge

Feb. 27th Etiquette Dinner, Learn about proper dining decorum during a 4 course meal including advice on proper attire during a business interview. 5:30-7:30, Blue Lounge

March 13th - National Alcohol Screening Day, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm, Sheehan Hall Multipurpose Room (Free giveaways and wing party for team w/most attendance)

First Year Student Athlete Workshops – This program was developed as a result of the Apple Conference attended in Jan. 2014.  First year student-athlete workshops are mandatory and achieve 100% attendance. 

Four monthly programs are offered yearly on the following Life Skills topics: 

Alcohol,  Time Mgt., Academic Success, Study Skills, Life after Athletics and Resume Building, Mental Health Awareness, Stress Mgt., Sleep Importance, Nutrition, Healthy Relationships, Bystander Intervention and Goal Setting.
