Worcester State Athletics to Host Division III Week (April 7-14)

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State University Athletic Department will join other institutions around the country in celebrating Division III Week, promoting the positive impact of student-athletes around campus and the surrounding community.

Approximately one out of every 10 undergraduates at Worcester State is a student-athlete, all competing in the sports they love while balancing busy academic schedules, jobs and other commitments throughout the year.

Many student-athletes excel in the classroom, demonstrate outstanding leadership and are engaged in community service activities. Worcester State will join nearly 450 schools and conferences in celebrating these great accomplishments.

The week will kick off with baseball and softball games on Thursday, April 7 (POSTPONED). First pitch for baseball will be at 3:30 p.m., while softball begins their doubleheader 4 p.m. The Worcester State University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will host a Lancer Game for the baseball team on this day.

On Saturday, the university hosts Congratulations Day to welcome the class of 2020 onto campus. There also will be baseball and softball games beginning at noon against MASCAC rivals, Westfield State, where SAAC will have a table at the entrance of Rockwood Park to handout snacks and goodies for the games.

On Monday, the University will host an Alumni Panel at Sullivan Auditorium. The panel will feature alumni who will discuss how their student-athlete experience at Worcester State had such a direct positive impact as their career development in the working world. The panel will include alumni Tara D’Andrea (’97), Christopher Harvey (’94), Derrick Murphy (’15), Caprera ('07), along with Brendan Moore (’10).

On Tuesday, the men’s golf team hosts the Rich Korzec Invitational and MASCAC Championships at the Blackstone National Golf Course, while baseball plays a single game against Amherst at TBA.

On Wednesday, show your school spirit by wearing blue for #WooBlue Wednesday. Also on April 13th, Worcester State’s Athletic Director, Michael Mudd, will host a Wellness Center informational table at the Sheehan Dining Hall from noon-1 p.m. The day will conclude with a CPR Training run by the American Heart Association from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at the Seven Hills Lounge in Wasylean Hall.

The week wraps up with a Lancer lacrosse game on Thursday (Apr. 14) at 7:00 p.m. against Curry.

In conjunction with the Worcester State Marketing Department, the Worcester State community will be involved in naming the new Lancer mascot. Alumni, students, faculty, and staff are eligible to vote for their favorite name. The official Mascot Committee will review all votes, including suggested names.
