Berkel Tabbed ECAC Division III New England Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week

DANBURY, Conn. – Freshman forward, Kaitlyn Berkel (Waterford, Conn.) has been tabbed the Corvias Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week as announced by the ECAC for the week ending Jan. 10.

 

Berkel averaged 11.7 points, 10.7 rebounds, and two blocks and two assists in a 1-2 week for the Lancers.

 

“Kait has been one of our more consistent players this season,” stated head coach Karen Tessmer. “She had a particularly good last week against three tough opponents.”

 

The freshman started her week off with a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds in a 78-61 loss to Suffolk University. She then netted 11 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals in a 48-46 win over MCLA in Wednesday’s conference opener. In the 50-43 setback to Salem State, Berkel compiled 11 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and two steals.

 

“She’s really developing into a solid all-around player who we can count on to provide contributions on both the offensive and defensive sides of the court,” commented Tessmer.

 

Berkel is averaging 9.9 points and 9.2 rebounds per game thus far this season. She currently stands second in the conference in rebounds per game, and fifth in the conference in blocks, averaging 1.6 per game.
