WHAT:
Worcester State University will showcase its new Wellness Center at a ceremonial Grand Opening. Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito and other state and local officials will join campus officials and students for a speaking program, followed by a ribbon cutting and tours of the facility.

The $52.6 million dollar Wellness Center’s 101,000 square feet will be the heartbeat of the campus for decades to come, offering a locale for fitness and recreational sports as well as an exciting venue for all to cheer on WSU's varsity teams. It will also spur a campus-wide holistic approach to promoting wellness among our students, faculty, and staff.

Among its highlights, the Wellness Center will include a 9,000-square-foot, two-level fitness center that includes treadmills, ellipticals, cycles, 25,000 pounds of weights and a circuit; a multi-purpose gymnasium for intramurals and other recreational sports, featuring 1,500 seats and two dividable courts and batting cages; an elevated track open to the community during certain hours; and the privately funded Richard R. Korzec Golf Simulator, featuring aboutGolf software, named after a former facilities employee and golf coach beloved by the WSU community.

The new building replaces a gym built in 1958 for a student population of roughly 400. Today, Worcester State has more than 6,000 undergraduate, graduate, full- and part-time students.

The construction project was funded in part via a 2008 bond bill and was overseen by DCAMM. The general contractor was W.T. Rich Company.
