Worcester State Headlines MASCAC Basketball Rookie of the Week Awards (Feb. 8-14)

WORCESTER, Mass. – Worcester State University’s freshmen basketball players, Alex Santos (Lawrence, Mass.) and Britt Herring (W. Brookfield, Mass.) headlined the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Basketball Rookie of the Week Awards for the week of Feb. 8-14.

 

Men’s Basketball:

Santos earned his eighth (third-consecutive) MASCAC Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week award.

 

Santos averaged 10 points, 3.5 rebounds and three assists in a 1-1 week for the Lancers.

 

He netted five points, four rebounds, four assists and a steal in the 73-71 win over Fitchburg State. He then collected 15 points, three rebounds and two assists, including the game-tying score in the 67-65 setback to Bridgewater State.

 

Santos is currently second in the MASCAC for 3-point shots made with 48 and ranks fifth in the conference with a 77.9 free throw percentage. He averages 13.9 points per game, good for eighth place in the MASCAC.

 
 

Women’s Basketball:

Herring was tabbed with her fourth (second-consecutive) MASCAC Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week award.

 

Herring averaged 17.5 points and 9.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week for the Blue and Gold.

 

She had a game-high 19 points and nine rebounds in the 47-29 win over Fitchburg State, and then registered a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds in the setback to Bridgewater State.

 

"It is great to see Britt continue to develop her post skills and really begin to ask for the ball in the post,
 commented head coach Karen Tessmer. “She has excellent touch around the basket and is beginning to expand her play outside the paint as well." 

 

Herring currently stands at second in the conference in field goal percentage (58.2%) and third in the conference in blocks with 53. Thus far this season, she is averaging 13.3 points per game and 8.8 rebounds per game, good for fifth and fourth place, respectively, in the MASCAC.

 

 

Honor Roll:

Junior center, Paul Brooks (Arlington, Mass.) averaged 18 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks while shooting 61 percent (17-28) from the field in a 1-1 week for the Lancers. He netted 14 points and a game-high 17 rebounds in the 73-71 victory over Fitchburg State. He also registered a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds in the 67-65 setback to Bridgewater State.

 

Senior forward, Nicholas Drill (Madison, Wis.) scored one goal and registered an assist in the Lancers’ 3-1 win over Fitchburg State on Thursday evening.

 

Junior Jared Barros (Taunton, Mass.) finished first in the 200 meter run with a time of 23.05 at the 2016 MASCAC/New England Alliance Men’s Indoor Track & Field Championships.

 

Junior Sam Weeks (Methuen, Mass.) was a dual winner in both the weight throw (15.13m) and the shot put (15.36m) at the 2016 MASCAC/New England Alliance Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championships.
