Vieira Named MASCAC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Rookie of the Week

WORCESTER, Mass. – Worcester State’s Marcus Vieira (Peabody, Mass.) has been named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Rookie of the Week for the week of Apr. 11-17. This is Vieira’s second time thus far in the outdoor 2016 season to be recognized with this honor.

 

At the Eric Loeschner Invitational, Vieira won both the men’s discus throw (42.04m) and men’s hammer throw (50.98m), while placing fourth in the shot put (13.70m).

 

“Marcus continues to be impressive week to week,” commented head coach Al Halper. “He has improved steadily and is among the top freshmen in his events nationally, especially in the hammer, where he is the second ranked freshmen in that event presently.”

 

“With the season now in full swing and the weather getting warmer, he will only get better,” added Halper. “He and junior captain Sam Weeks lead the throws squad to excel as a group which they also do week to week.”

 

Next weekend the Lancers travel to Springfield for Springfield College’s Spring Invitational.

 

Honor Roll:

George Bielizna (Danbury, Conn.) batted .429 with a double and two RBI in four games for the Lancers. He went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a walk in the setback to MIT, and then hit 3-for-3 in the 5-0 setback to Bridgewater State.

 

Jackson Davis (Spencer, Mass.) finished tied for second place at the MASAC Men’s Golf Championship/Rich Korzec Invitational, carding a 76 (+4), including two birdies on the front nine.

 

Jackie Connors (Ashland, Mass.) tallied 12 points on eight goals and four assists with six ground balls, eight draw controls, and one caused turnover in a 1-1 week for the Lancers. She scored four goals and added an assist with three draws and two ground ball sin the 17-16 setback to Curry and added another four goals and three assists with five draws and four ground balls in the 19-9 win over Framingham State.

 

Meghan Rich (Chelmsford, Mass.) went 1-2 with a 2.75 ERA and 11 strikeouts in the circle for the Lancers. She pitched for four innings, allowing four hits and one earned run in the 8-5 win over WPI.

 

Hayley Terry (N. Dighton, Mass.) batted .355 (11-31) with a double and an RBI and averaged a .432 on base percentage in a 2-8 week for the Lancers. She hit the game-winning RBI in the 5-4 eight inning victory over Rhode Island College.

 

Sam Weeks (Methuen, Mass.) finished first in the shot put with a top throw of 15.25m, qualifying for both Division III New England and ECAC Championships. He then came in at second in the discus (41.35m) and hammer (50.38m) at the Eric Loeschner Invitational.

 

Dalena Le (Worcester, Mass.) placed first in the 400 Meter Hurdles with a time of 1:07.07 at the Eric Loeschner Invitational to qualify for Division III New England’s. She also marked a sixth place finish in the women’s triple jump (10.27m).

 

Hanna Carson (Natick, Mass.) had a second place finish in the shot put with a top-throw of 11.99m to qualify for Division III New England and ECAC Championships. She also placed eighth in both the discus throw and hammer throw.
