Westfield, MA --- 92 Worcester State student-athletes have been selected to the 2014 MASCAC Spring All-Academic Team as announced by conference media relations director Emily Diekelmann.
660 honorees were selected by the eight MASCAC institutions as the Lancers had the third-highest sum earn the prestigious accolade in the league.
"On behalf of the entire athletics department, we are extremely proud of the academic achievements during the spring semester," said Director of Athletics Michael Mudd. "The work ethic of our young men and women in the classroom, combined with their efforts on the playing field will play dividends towards reaching future career goals."
To earn a spot on the MASCAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must have achieved a 3.20 cumulative or semester-based grade point average during their semester of competition. The spring academic honor roll also includes 17 additional winter student-athletes who performed during the second semester.
For the 2013-14 academic year, WSU set a new institutional standard with 234 total student-athletes while also eclipsing previous marks with 78 student-athletes named to the Fall All-Academic Team and 64 who earned certificates on the Winter All-Academic Team.
Among Worcester State sports, 10 out of the 12 student-athletes on the softball team earned laurels (3.02 Spring Team GPA) while 30 out of 41 were recognized from the women’s track and field squad (3.30 Spring Team GPA). Overall for the spring semester, the cumulative grade point average of all student-athletes was a 3.01.
Over the next two weeks, the Worcester State athletics department will recognize each MASCAC spring sport individually for their outstanding achievements in the classroom this past semester.
