99 WSU Student-Athletes Named To 2014 MASCAC Fall All-Academic Team

 

Westfield, MA --- 99 Worcester State student-athletes have been tabbed to the 2014 MASCAC Fall All-Academic team as announced by media relations director Emily Diekelmann.

737 honorees were selected overall as the Lancers had the third-highest sum in the MASCAC earn the prestigious accolade.

The total number of WSU student-athletes also marked the highest since the league began listing its all-academic honor roll on a season-by-season basis during the 2009-10 academic year and is 19 more than last year.

To earn a spot on the MASCAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must have achieved a 3.20 cumulative or semester-based grade point average during their semester of competition.

“Our student-athletes continue to do an excellent job managing their time and 'doing the work' in order to perform well on and off the field” Director of Athletics Michael Mudd. “I also commend the coaches and athletics staff who provide our student-athletes with the best resources necessary to reach excellence in the classroom".

Among Worcester State fall sports, eight out of 11 on the women's cross country team were recognized as they posted the best semester grade point average in the department this past fall (3.36). The men's golf team also had the highest number receive laurels in the MASCAC with seven out of ten and a 3.26 GPA.

Other noteworthy teams included the men's soccer squad who had the second most honorees in the conference (12), the men's cross country team equaled the second highest sum in the MASCAC (11) and 12 out of 21 on the field hockey team tied for second among the six institutions that sponsor the sport while posting a 3.18 GPA.

Out of the all WSU selections, 38 were repeat winners while those who had earned the accolade in all four seasons included Emil Dedo (Worcester, MA/Doherty) of the men's soccer team and Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, MA) who stars on the women's volleyball squad.

Over the next two weeks the Worcester State athletics department will announce its individual fall athletics teams for their outstanding achievements in the classroom this past semester.
