105 Worcester State Student-Athletes Named to Spring 2016 MASCAC All-Academic Team

MASCAC Spring 2016 All-Academic Team

WORCESTER, Mass. —  A total of 855 student-athletes have been honored by the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) with selection to the league’s Spring 2016 All-Academic Team that was released earlier today by Commissioner Angela Baumann.

Student-athletes that compete in championship varsity sports offered by each of the MASCAC institutions during the course of the spring 2016 athletic season and have achieved a 3.20 cumulative or semester-based grade point average during the semester are eligible for selection to the Spring All-Academic Team. The sports recognized are baseball women’s lacrosse, softball and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. The team also includes student-athletes that competed in winter sports during the spring semester.

Westfield State University closed out the spring semester with the most student-athletes on the 2016 MASCAC Spring All-Academic Team with 263 total while Bridgewater State University and Fitchburg State University are next with 127, Worcester State University landed 105 and Salem State University rounded out the group with 75 student-athletes on the team.

“The increase in numbers on the MASCAC Spring All-Academic Team continues to show the strength of academics among the MASCAC student-athletes,” Commissioner Baumann said. “Our student-athletes continue to thrive in the classroom while being successful in the field of play and around the community which is a true testament to the MASCAC and Division III philosophy.”

In total, Worcester State named 272 total student-athletes to the MASCAC All-Academic Team for the 2015-16 academic year as the student-athletes at Worcester State registered a 3.06 overall cumulative GPA. Some other Worcester State statistics include:

  • 11 out of our 19 varsity sport teams had a 3.0 GPA or higher in the spring 2016 semester
  • 250 total student-athletes marked a 3.2 GPA or higher in the spring 2016 semester (46%)
  • Worcester State student-athletes’ overall spring 2016 GPA was a 3.09
  • 19 Worcester State student-athletes recorded a 4.0 GPA in the spring 2016 semester

“I continue to be impressed with the job our student-athletes are doing in the classroom,” stated Worcester State's Director of Athletics, Michael Mudd.  “It demonstrates their commitment to representing themselves and Worcester State in a positive manner.”
