WSU Student-Athletes to Participate In Special Olympics Winter Games

Worcester, MA --- This Saturday and Sunday, Worcester State student-athletes will be volunteering their time to help host a basketball event in conjunction with the Special Olympics Winter Games.

The efforts, which are being spearheaded by the WSU Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), will be facilitating the event in association with the Special Olympics of Massachusetts in the Lancer Gym. Members of the hockey team will also be pitching in their time to help run a Floor Hockey event at South High.

Other sponsored Special Olympic winter sports include Alpine Skiing and Bowling.

Several similar basketball tournaments will be run across the Greater Worcester area and at locations such as Assumption College, Auburn High, Bancroft School, Clark University, Notre Dame Academy, Worcester Academy and Worcester Tech.

Last year the NCAA Division III SAAC created a partnership with the Special Olympics as a part of a coordinated community outreach effort to involve hundreds of SAACs around the country at schools and at the conference level.

The partnership is designed to help improve the lives of the Special Olympics athletes through their involvement with Division III student-athletes and foster a mutual learning experience between Division III student-athlete and Special Olympics athletes.
