UW-Stevens Point Defeats Worcester State, 13-2

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Worcester State University baseball team was defeated by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) by a score of 13-2 Tuesday afternoon at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex.

 

The Pointers held the Lancers to just five hits throughout the entirety of the game, while UWSP recorded their 13 runs on 15 hits and one Worcester State error. Tyler Thomka (Muskego, Wis.) batted a perfect 4-for-4 on the occasion and tallied three runs. Clint Rose (Watertown, Wis.) picked up a game-high four RBI, batting 3-for-5 on the afternoon. Ben Gerber (Stoughton, Wisc.) and Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill.) each picked up two hits apiece for the Pointers.

 

Batting at the .500 mark for the Lancers was Seth Leslie (Phillipston, Mass.) who went 2-for-4 with a double, and Kenan Kolanda (Sterling, Mass.) who went 1-for-2 with a walk.

 

The Pointers began their scoring spree in the top of the 2nd inning when they brought in six runs on four hits. With runners on the corners, Duddleston drove the first run of the game in on a single to right field. Another run came in moments later on a Worcester State wild pitch. Ahead 2-0 with only one out, the Pointers were able to trace four more runs in on a 2-RBI single from Gerber, an RBI single from Thomka, and a fielder's choice.

 

UWSP added to their lead in the top of the 5th and 6th on a total of six hits to advance the score to 11-0.

 

Worcester State spoiled the shutout and scored one run apice in the 6th and 7th innings on RBI from Dezmond Aguirre (Springfield, Mass.) and Jake Ryan (Northbridge, Mass.).

 

The Lancers held the Pointers to just two more runs in the top of the 8th on two hits and one fielding error, to settle the score at 13-2.

 

USPW's Beau Zeihen (Portage, Wis.) earned his first win of the season in a 6-inning performance, allowing two runs (one unearned) on four Lancer hits. Worcester State's Ronnie Luke (Malden, Mass.) took the loss in a 4.1 innings pitched, allowing seven runs on nine hits.

 

The Lancers will take a break tomorrow before returning to play on Thursday (Mar. 23) when they take on Elmhurst in a 10:15am game at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex.
