Baseball Falls to Fisher College, 9-4

WORCESTER, Mass. –Fisher College held the Lancers to just four runs on six hits as the Worcester State baseball team lost by a score of 9-4 in a Thursday afternoon non-league game at the Kevin D. Lyons Diamond.

This was Worcester State and Fisher College's second outing of the 2017 season, as the Lancers posted a 15-14 win over Fisher College on March 2.

Fisher's starting pitcher, Kevlin Guzman (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) earned his third win of the season on the mound, as he pitched for 6.2 innings and only permitted one earned run (three unearned) on four hits and struck out three batters.

Worcester State's six hits were scattered amongst six different batters. Jimmy Sheehan (Oxford, Mass.) accounted for two of the Lancers' four runs, while Kenan Kolanda (Sterling, Mass.) and Mike Powers (Weymouth, Mass.) accounted for the Blue and Gold's two RBI.

The Falcons' offense was led by Sam Schroeder (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) who collected three hits, including a home run and a double. He also picked up three runs and two RBI. Kyle Anulao (Peoria, Ariz.) marked a game-high three RBI and went 2-for-4 from the plate with a sacrifice fly. Also recording two hits were Reinaldo Moreta (Boston, Mass.), Angel Perez Vargas (Dorado, Puerto Rico), and Jaime Villafane (San Juan, Puerto Rico).

The Lancers logged the first run of the game in the top of the 2nd inning on an RBI single from Powers who drove in Sheehan, who had reached base on a catcher's interference.

However, the Falcons bats came alive in the 4th inning when they broke Bradleigh Saltsman's (Ayer, Mass.) no-hitter and scored four runs on four hits and one Worcester State error. With two outs on the board, Anulao hit an RBI double to right center to knot the score at 1-1. Anualo then stole third and advance home on an error from Worcester State's catcher to take the 2-1 lead. The Falcons plated two additional runs on a 2-RBI single from Villafane to put Fisher ahead 4-1.

The Lancers cut the Falcons' lead to two runs in the flip side of the inning when Sheehan scored his second run of the game on a failed pickoff attempt.

Fisher added two more runs on hits from Schroeder and Anulao in the top of the 5th to put the Lancers' deficit at four.

Worcester State took advantage of a Fisher College error in the bottom of the 6th and cut the shortfall to three (6-3).

Fisher added two more in the top of the 7th and the Lancers responded with one of their own on the bottom half, putting the score at 8-4.

Fisher closed out the game with another run in the 9th on a solo shot to left center from Schroeder.

Saltsman was tagged his second loss of the season in a 4.2 inning performance, allowing six runs on seven hits.

The Lancers (12-14) resume play on Saturday (Apr. 22) when they host Salem State in a doubleheader at the Lyons Diamond. First pitch is set for 12 noon. Fisher (25-18) returns to action tomorrow when they host Vaughn in their first game on a 3-game series.
