WORCESTER, Mass. – Two Worcester State University baseball players have been named to All-Region teams as announced by D3baseball.com, the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), and the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) this week.
Senior designated hitter, Adam Barry (Auburn, Mass.) has been named to the ABCA/NEIBA Division III All-New England second team, and has been selected to attend in the 2017 NEIBA All-Star team, to be played on Friday, June 2 at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, R.I.
Barry, a four-year starter and three-time MASCAC all-conference member, led the Lancers in at bats (166), RBI (36) and home runs (4) in the 2017 campaign. In his 166 at bats, he registered 57 hits – 10 of which were doubles, two triples, and four home runs – for a .343 batting and a .500 slugging percentage. He currently holds the Worcester State record in career singles (154) and career at bats (593).
The NEIBA and the ABCA honored 48 players from 24 different schools, highlighted by the selections of Eastern Connecticut State University senior Alex Zachary as the player of the year, and Tufts University senior Speros Varinos as the pitcher of the year. Additionally, Babson College skipper Matt Noone was tabbed as the NEIBA Division III Coach of the Year.
Worcester State's four-year starter and two-time all-conference recipient, Jake Ryan (Northbridge, Mass.) has also been recognized and has been named to D3baseball.com's third team All-New England as an outfielder.
Ryan led the team in batting average (.360), slugging percentage (.516), runs (44), hits (58), triples (3), walks (20), and stolen bases (7). Defensively, he registered 90 putouts and two assists in 94 total chances (.979). He concludes his career tied with Eric Swedberg for the Worcester State all-time career record in triples (13) and is second in the books with 64 career walks.
The 2017 marks the sixth year that D3baseball.com has named All-Region teams, with 800 players nominated. For each of the eight regions, there is a regional player of the year (a batter), a pitcher of the year, a rookie of the year (must be a freshman) and a coach of the year.
