Baseball Downed 12-8 by WPI

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. - The Worcester State University baseball team suffered its second consecutive loss on Wednesday afternoon, falling 12-8 to WPI in non-conference action at the New England Baseball Complex.

With the loss, the Lancers fall to 7-4 on the season. WPI improves to 14-5.

Worcester State got on the board first in the top of the first inning on an RBI ground-rule double from junior Kevin Larkin (Rocky Hill, Conn.), which scored sophomore Jake Breton (Wilbraham, Mass.) from second base.

WPI answered in a big way in the bottom of the inning, putting up a six-spot to take the early advantage.

Worcester State's offense chipped away at the lead, scoring runs in each of the first five innings. A two-run double from Kenan Kolanda (Sterling, Mass.) in the third and a two-run triple from Larkin in the fourth were the big hits for the Lancers during the rally, as Worcester State cut the deficit down to 7-6 through three and a half.

The Engineers tacked on a pair in the bottom of the fourth to retake a three-run lead, which put a slow to Worcester State's rally.

With his team already ahead 10-8 in the bottom of the seventh inning, senior Steven Gallagher hammered a two-run homer over the left center field fence to put the Engineers up 12-8.

The loss went to Worcester State starter Josh Boucher (Auburn, Mass.), who allowed six earned runs in the top of the first inning. Larkin and junior Cooper Bigelow (Leominster, Mass.) each registered a pair of hits to lead Worcester State offensively.

Worcester State will return to action on Friday when they open conference play with a matchup against Westfield State at Lyons Diamond.
