BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - The Worcester State University baseball team opened up a three-game Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend series against Bridgewater State University with a 15-4 loss to the Bears Friday afternoon at Alumni Park.
With the loss, Worcester State drops to 8-8 overall and 1-3 in MASCAC. Bridgewater improves to 6-9 and 3-2 in the conference.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the third inning, Worcester State got on the board when junior Kenan Kolanda (Sterling, Mass.) scampered home from third on a suicide squeeze from freshman Michael Chaves Jr. (Hudson, Mass.). An inning later, the Lancers tied the score when freshman Andrew Miller (Naples, Fla.) scored from third on a passed ball.
The tie wouldn't last for long, as Bridgewater would score two in the fifth, nine in the sixth, and two in the seventh to take a commanding 15-2 lead.
Worcester State mounted a mini-comeback in the top of the ninth inning, but the damage was already done. Freshman Matt Bouley (Hatfield, Mass.) recorded an RBI single in the inning, and junior Cooper Bigelow (Leominster, Mass.) brought a run home on a sacrifice fly.
Of Bridgewater State's 15 runs in the contest, only seven were earned runs and the Lancers committed five errors on the afternoon.
Games two and three of the series will be played Saturday at Worcester State's Lyons Diamond. First pitch in game one is slated for 12 p.m.
