Nine-Run Sixth Lifts Baseball Over Clark

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University baseball team used a nine-run sixth inning to defeat crosstown rival Clark University 10-8 Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Granger Field.

With the win, the Lancers move to 13-13 overall on the season.

Things did not look promising for Worcester State in the early going, as Clark jumped out to a 6-1 lead through four innings.

Worcester State had just three hits in the game's first five innings, before the offense exploded for nine runs on seven hits in the sixth. Ben Palatino (Hudson, Mass.), Seth Leslie (Phillipston, Mass.), Kenan Kolanda (Sterling, Mass.), and Cooper Bigelow (Leominster, Mass.) all had RBI hits in the inning, before freshman Andrew Miller (Naples, Fla.) recorded the big blow with a grand slam to cap the massive rally.

Clark scored single runs in the seventh and eighth, but couple not get the big hit when they needed it late. Freshman Aidan Abernathy (Methuen, Mass.) slammed the door shut with a perfect ninth inning to get his third save of the season.

Senior Josh Boucher (Auburn, Mass.) got his first victory of the season on the bump, throwing 4.1 innings in relief, allowing three earned on six hits while striking out three. Starter Justin Pena (Mansfield, Mass.) finished the game with a no-decision.

Worcester State will be back in action on Thursday with a conference matchup against MCLA at Lyons Diamond. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
