Baseball Defeats Mass. Maritime to Take Three-Game Set

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – The Worcester State University baseball team claimed a 6-5 win over Massachusetts Maritime Academy Monday afternoon in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference at Commodore Hendy Field.

Maritime started off the game with a bang with a three-run home run off the bat of shortstop Dylan Sullo (Acushnet, Mass.) in the bottom of the first inning.

Worcester struck back in the top of the second inning, scoring one run on a wild pitch, and a second run on a Cooper Bigelow (Leominster, Mass.) RBI single to bring the score to 3-2 after one and a half innings.

The Bucs scored a fourth run in the bottom of the third when Nick Haley (Hanson, Mass.) singled to score Paul Sances (Middleboro, Mass.) from second.

Neither team scored a run in the fourth or fifth innings but, in the sixth, the Lancers erased the deficit and took a 6-4 lead with a four-spot. They crossed one of the four runs on a bases loaded walk of Seth Leslie (Phillipston, Mass.) and another on a squeeze bunt by catcher Michael Chaves, Jr. (Hudson, Mass.), scoring Kevin Larkin (Rocky Hill, Conn.).

Down 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth, Angus McNeil (Middleton, Mass.) cut the two-run deficit in half with a solo home run over the right centerfield fence.

Over the final three innings, both teams threatened multiple times with a number of runners in scoring positions, but neither team would score again as the Lancers took the 6-5 victory.

On the hill, Worcester State junior Chris Elliott (Plymouth, Mass.) got the win, throwing six innings and allowing five earned on seven hits. PJ Walsh (Bridgewater, Mass.) got the save with three innings of shutout ball, allowing just one hit.

Haley had three of the Buccaneer hits, Sullo had two, including his home run, which drove in three runs. McNeil also had a multi-hit game for the Bucs, drove in a run, and walked twice.

Worcester went 10-for-34 at the plate. Third baseman Sam Allen (Springfield, Mass.), designated hitter Jake Breton (Wilbraham, Mass.), and Bigelow each had multi-hit games.

All of Worcester's 10 hits were singles. Five different players drove in runs and six different players scored for the Lancers in the game.

Worcester drew 14 walks, struck out five times and left 18 runners on base in the game.

Worcester State will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at home against Salve Regina. The first game of the doubleheader is slated for 2:30 p.m.
