Baseball Opens Weekend Series with Win

SALEM, Mass. - The Worcester State University baseball team picked up a 7-2 win over Salem State Friday afternoon in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action at Central Campus Field.

With the win, the Lancers pick up their 20th win of the season, improving to 20-17 overall and 11-8 in the MASCAC.

An RBI double from Sam Allen (Springfield, Mass.) had Worcester State ahead 1-0 in the top of the second inning, before senior Michael Ferrara (Easton, Mass.) extended Worcester's lead to 3-0 in the top of the third. Ferrara would come around to score on an error two batters later, and the Lancers led 4-0 after three innings.

Worcester State recorded its second consecutive three-run inning in the fourth to jump ahead 7-0. Freshman Michael Chaves Jr. (Hudson, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch to open the inning, before a run scored on an error. An RBI single from junior Kevin Larkin (Rocky Hill, Conn.) capped the offense for the Lancers in the frame.

Seven runs would be more than enough run support for Worcester State pitcher PJ Walsh (Bridgewater, Mass.), who was dealing on the afternoon. The Vikings were only able to muster single runs in the fourth and sixth innings, as Walsh recorded the complete game win. The junior allowed just the two earned runs on seven hits while striking out five to grab his third win of the season.

Ferrara, Larkin, and Allen all tallied a pair of hits to lead Worcester State offensively.

The Lancers and Vikings will finish off their series on Saturday with a pair of contests at Worcester State's Lyons Diamond. First pitches are scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
