Baseball Dropped by Dean

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. - The Worcester State University baseball team suffered an 11-8 defeat at the hands of Dean College Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at the New England Baseball Complex.

Worcester State got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI base hit from senior Seth Allen (Springfield, Mass.), but the Lancer lead would be short-lived. Dean scored five runs, all unearned, over the next two innings, taking a 5-2 lead.

Allen got two of the runs back in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run home run to left field to cut the deficit to 5-4. It was the first of two long balls for Allen on the afternoon, as he smacked a solo shot over the left center field fence in the bottom of the sixth.

Trailing 11-6 headed to the bottom of the eighth, but didn't go down quietly. An RBI double from Jake Breton (Wilbraham, Mass.) cut Worcester's deficit to 11-7, and a passed ball scored junior Patrick Galvin (Shrewsbury, Mass.) from third base moments later. Breton was stranded on third however to end the frame.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Lancers threatened once again, but with runners on second and third, Dean pitcher Ryan Stover induced a Galvin lineout to first base to end the game.

Allen finished the day batting 3-for-4 with four RBIs to go along with the pair of home runs. Breton also finished with three hits while driving in a pair of runs.

Matt Callahan and Landon Fish each went 2-for-5 with a home run in the victory for Dean.

The win was credited to reliever Tyler Sargent, who threw two innings allowing two earned runs on three hits. Freshman Ben Smith (Bourne, Mass.) took the loss, allowing three runs, all unearned, in one inning.

Next up for Worcester State, they will be back in action on Saturday, March 14 in Florida for a matchup against Benedictine (IL). First pitch is slated for 5:15 p.m.
