Bumpus, Gencarelli Honored With ECAC Northeast, MASCAC Weekly Laurels

Cape Cod, MA --- Junior Kevin Bumpus (Bridgewater, MA) and sophomore Brian Gencarelli (Niantic, CT) have both recieved Corvais ECAC Division III Northeast and MASCAC football weekly honors for their efforts in a 64-63 shootout victory over Mass Maritime this past Saturday.

Bumpus, who was named the ECAC and MASCAC Offensive Player of the Week, went 22-for-33 with 333 passing yards and tied a school record with five touchdowns of 60, 5, 38, 18 and 15 yards – including the game winning score with no time left. Bumpus also had two rushes that included a two-yard touchdown to start off the second half.

He came off the bench midway through the second quarter and helped the Lancers rally from a 27-point deficit against the Buccaneers. Down 41-14, Bumpus helped orchestrate an effort that included 44 unanswered points and four passing touchdowns in the span of 20 minutes for a 58-41 score which set the stage for one of the wildest finishes in Division III this season.

Playing in three of four games this campaign, Bumpus is currently second in New England in passing yards (863) and third in average passing yards (287.7 YPG) while he is one of three quarterbacks in the region to have thrown nine or more touchdown passes on the campaign.

Gencarelli shined in his first collegiate start at cornerback for the Lancers en route to Co-ECAC and MASCAC Defensive Player of the Week and accolades. He finished with 11 tackles (eight solo) to go with two interceptions for 36 yards and a pair of pass deflections.

His first interception was one of three turnovers that helped the Blue and Gold rally from their early deficit and the second pick came midway through the fourth quarter, inside Lancer territory.

Gencarelli is currently sixth on the squad in tackles with 15 (12 solo) and he is tied for the team lead with two interceptions.

With two of his squads three picks off Gagliardi Trophy candidate Mike Stanton (Quincy, MA) on Saturday, the Lancers moved into a second-place tie for seven INTs in the MASCAC team standings. He shared ECAC Defensive Player of the Week accolades with sophomore Joe Rizzardi (Ashburn, VA) of Coast Guard, who was this week's Division II/III New England Writers Golden Helmet honoree.

After the bye this week, Worcester State heads up I-190 to take on Fitchburg State on October 12.
