New England Football Writers Association Release

WORCESTER, Mass. – Worcester State University's Jacob Maher (Marshfield, Mass.) has been named to the 2017 New England Football Writers Division II/III All-New England Team, as announced by the organization Sunday (Nov. 26) afternoon.

"Maher was the main force for us offensively this year," commented head coach  Brien Cullen who led his team to a 6-4 winning season and a 5-3 record in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC). "We were really excited that he bounced back from an injury year last season."

Maher, a 6-3 sophomore tight end, finished the 2017 season with a league-best 14 receiving touchdowns for a team-best 84 points on the season. He totaled 986 receiving yards, averaging 98.6 yards per game for the second-best mark in the MASCAC. Maher also rushed 10 times for 13 yards and earned a spot on the MASCAC First-Team All-Conference as a tight end this season.

Cullen mentioned that Maher took Casey Hippert's spot in the lineup, who coincidentally received the same award in three years ago. "Being a pick from Divisions II and III and earning All-New England is quite an honor and pretty rare," said Cullen. "We are really looking forward to Jake having two more years to grow with us."

Maher was the lone Lancer, one of six MASCAC selections, and one of thirty players on the Division II/III All-New England team and will be honored at the New England Football Writers Captains and Awards Banquet on Tuesday, December 5, at the Montvale Plaza, in Stoneham, Mass. Those interested in attending should contact Dick Lipe at Bentley University at 781-891-2334.
