WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University football team suffered a 51-0 defeat to cross-town rival WPI on Friday evening to open its 2019 season.
With the loss, Worcester State drops to 0-1 on the season. WPI improves to 1-0.
Worcester State couldn't get anything going on offense all day long, while WPI's offense clicked from the get-go. After Worcester State suffered a three-and-out on the first possession of the game, the Engineers needed just six plays and 1:34 to get 82 yards for their first score of the season. Clark Ewen capped off the touchdown drive by hauling in a 22-yard reception for six points. After one quarter, WPI led 14-0.
WPI scored a trio of touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 34-0 lead into the break.
A pair of short touchdown runs highlighted the second half offensively for WPI, as Connor Field and Zach Uglevich each punched in scores to close out the 51-0 win.
Worcester State quarterback Aaron-Moses Williams (Springfield, Mass.) was 10-for-24 on the evening, throwing for 99 yards with two interceptions. Kyler Brown (Chelmsford, Mass.) led the receiving corps with three catches for 31 yards. Defensively, Nick Ashley (Worcester, Mass.) led the Lancers with eight tackles, seven of which solo.
The Lancers will play in their home opener next Friday, September 13, against Becker College. Kickoff from John F. Coughlin Memorial Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
