WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University football team continues to seek its first win of the season after suffering a 12-10 loss to Becker College Friday evening in non-conference action at John F. Coughlin Memorial Field.
With the loss, Worcester State drops to 0-2 on the season, while Becker improves to 2-0.
Becker drew first blood at the 4:22 mark of the first quarter when Taizon Barrett punched one in from six yards out to cap a 12-play, 86-yard drive. The snap was muffed on the extra point try however, and Becker took a 6-0 lead.
Worcester State would cut the lead in half midway through the second quarter, when Aaron-Moses Williams nailed a field goal from 39 yards out to cut the lead to 6-3. The score held up as the halftime score, as the Lancers trailed by just one possession at the break.
Neither team would score again until Becker scored a vital touchdown for some insurance with under five minutes to play. Randy Morgan got one across the goal-line on fourth and goal from inside the one to put the dagger into Worcester State and give the guests a 12-3 lead after a missed extra point.
The Lancers responded with their first touchdown of the season on the ensuing possession, as freshman Cam Kergo (Mashpee, Mass.) pulled in a 12-yard touchdown reception with 2:04 remaining to make things interesting. Trailing by just a score of 12-10, Worcester State was unable to haul in the resulting onside kick, and the Hawks ran out the clock to earn their second consecutive victory.
Becker's run game proved to be the difference maker in the contest, as the Hawks rushed the ball 66 times while attempting just seven passes. Becker's leading rusher on the night was Morgan, who finished with 105 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries.
Nick Ashley (Worcester, Mass.) led the Lancers defensively for the second consecutive week, recording 15 tackles in the defeat. Junior Danny George (Leicester, Mass.) finished just behind Ashley with 13 tackles. Williams was sharp for Worcester State through the air, completing 19 of his 33 attempts for 199 yards and a touchdown.
Worcester State will open conference play next Saturday with a road trip to Plymouth State on September 21. Kickoff from New Hampshire is set for 1:00 p.m.
