Babson Shuts Down Field Hockey, 5-0

Worcester, MA --- Highlighted by a four assists from sophomore Kelsi McDougle (Hopedale, MA) and five different goal scorers, Babson defeated Worcester State, 5-0, in non-conference field hockey action this evening at Coughlin Field.

The Beavers (2-0) got the scoring started with 10:24 off the clock in the first when sophomore Staci Swallow (S. Portland, ME) finished off a cross following a corner try at the top of the arc by McDougle.

Babson tacked on two more goals to build up the 3-0 advantage at the intermission. Senior Caroline Malone (Walpole, MA) notched her second of the campaign at the 20:28 mark and junior Elizabeth Holmes (Southboro, MA) followed 12 minutes later.

Freshman Julie Mortimer (Spencer, MA) potted her first collegiate tally just six minutes into the second period and sophomore Victoria Spofford (Merrimac, MA) capped off the scoring for the Beavers with 9:02 remaining in regulation.

The Lancers had several chances throughout the contest to break the shutout, but could not capitalize on their opportunities.

Early in the final frame, Babson junior netminder Kayla Costa (Watertown, MA) knocked away an attempt at the top of the apron by junior Megan Ripke (Southwick, MA) after a penalty corner.

Midway through the same stanza, freshman Hayley Sutherland (Tewksbury, MA) had another bid on the right side, however, Costa turned the ball aside and she covered up the rebound that was followed up by junior Katelyn Carmody (Shelburne Falls, MA).

Costa finished with four saves while freshman Kathryn Salemme (Boxboro, MA) recorded six stops in the setback for WSU. Both keepers impressed the crowd by stopping one penalty stroke each - including a first-half try by senior Kelli McPherson (Mansfield, MA).

Babson enjoyed a 16-6 lead in shots (11-5 on goal) and a 14-8 margin in penalty corners.

Both squads continue their seasons with non-league opponents. Worcester State hosts Salve Regina at 3:30 PM as the Beavers make the trek to Connecticut College for a 7 PM meeting.
