Field Hockey Dispatches Unbeaten WPI, 3-1

Worcester, MA --- The Worcester State field hockey team capitalized on three consecutive penalty corners to hand previously unbeaten WPI a 3-1 setback in a non-conference contest on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

With the win, the Lancers evened out at 3-3 while the Engineers slipped to 5-1 on the year.

Junior Amy Misera (Hunt Valley, MD) knocked down a pass from senior Mary Lee Barboza (Rochester, MA) and promptly snuck it past the Lancer goalkeeper at 8:06 for her 10th career goal.

Over the next 22 minutes, each team was awarded a pair of penalty corners. On the final corner of the frame, junior Julie O'Rourke (Worcester, MA) had her initial shot saved before dishing the ball off to senior Molly Kilday (Westford, MA) who evened the game at 1-1 with 2:12 left in the half.

WPI was credited with a trio of shots, including one that caromed off freshman netminder Kathryn Salemme (Boxboro, MA), in the first 10 minutes.

Following the break, O'Rourke swept the ball to the middle of the arc to setup the go-ahead goal by junior Krissy Kenney (Rehoboth, MA) courtesy of the Lancers second consecutive penalty corner at 37:29.

Another penalty corner led to a third Worcester State tally when junior Erika Lepkowski (Baldwinville, MA) knocked home a rebound at 44:15. Shortly after a WPI timeout, Misera had a shot turned aside by Salemme at 44:40. WPI took two of the three penalty corners down the stretch while each side had a shot go wide.

Salemme finished with a pair of saves in the victory. WPI junior backstop Lauren Puishys (Oxford, MA) made one stop.

Worcester State was awarded five of the nine penalty corners while each team took six shots.

Both squads will host conference opponents at 2 PM on Saturday. The Engineers entertain Smith on Saturday in middle of a NEWMAC tripleheader at home while the Lancers host Framingham State.
