Field Hockey's Run Ends In Little East Quarterfinals To UMass Dartmouth

N. Dartmouth, MA --- UMass Dartmouth junior Jill Leverault (Somerset, MA) notched two first-half goals to help lift the Corsairs to a 3-1 triumph over sixth-seeded Worcester State in the quarterfinals of the Little East Tournament at Cressy Field.

UMass Dartmouth (11-10) moves on to the semifinals to take on #7 Southern Maine, who upset second-seeded Plymouth State earlier today by the score of 4-1. The Lancers wrap up their 2014 campaign at 10-9 overall.

Leverault scored both of her markers 62 seconds apart to help the Corsairs build up the 2-0 advantage. Her first was off an assist by Hunter Carden (Bradford, CT) off a deflected penalty corner and her second was at 12:23 at the top of the arc.

With the 8-1 edge in shots on their side, UMD tacked on one more goal at the intermission. Senior Chelsey Campbell (Barre, MA) had some help from junior Emily Anderson (Medway, MA) following another penalty corner.

Worcester State came back in the second half and sliced into the deficit just under 10 minutes into the frame. Taking advantage of a scramble for the ball in front of the net, junior Taylor Ledwith (Springfield, MA/Cathedral) sent a cross over to senior Molly Kilday (Westford, MA) for the 3-1 score.

At the 60 minute mark, junior Julie O'Rourke (Worcester, MA/St. Peter-Marian) had a great look, but her attempt went to the left.

WSU pulled their netminder for an extra attacker and placed a few shots on net, however, the Lancers couldn't finish. In the waning moments, O'Rourke forced sophomore Elizabeth St. Germain (Wareham, MA) to make a save and sophomore Meghan Pini's (Natick, MA) bid went to the right on the rebound.

St. Germain finished the game with one stop in the victory while freshman Kathryn Salemme (Boxboro, MA) turned aside four in the setback.

UMD finished with the 10-6 margin in shots while also doubling up the visitors in penalty corners (8-4).
