WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State University field hockey team earned their first win of the season as they defeated the Salve Regina Seahawks 4-1 in non-conference action at John Coughlin Stadium on Thursday (Sep. 8) evening.

Worcester State's senior Meghan Pini (Natick, Mass.) and freshman Olivia Antonelli (Westford, Mass.) each tallied four points apiece, as Pini registered the first goal and assisted two goals of Antonelli's. Antonelli not only recorded her first goal of her collegiate career, but also her second in tonight's contest.

After the score remained at a nil for the first 30 minutes of the game, Worcester saw an opening to take the lead in the 31st minute when freshman Michaila Parent (Westborough, Mass.) darted a quick pass right to Pini who fired the ball into the goal (1-0).

In the second half, Worcester State managed to score three goals in a five minute stanza as Antonelli deposited two on assists from Pini and Hayley Sutherland (Tewksbury, Mass.). The Lancers' Jolane Thibault (Douglas, Mass.) marked the fourth and final goal for the Blue and Gold in the 61st minute when she carried the ball in around the defender and ripped the ball into the left back corner of the goal.

It wasn't until the 65th minute that Salve Regina's Jillian Mosca (Whitesboro, N.Y.) spoiled the Lancers' shutout as Allison Notarangelo (Hingham, Mass.) crossed the ball from the right side to Mosca and put away a goal for the Seahawks, in turn, resulting in the 4-1 score.

Worcester State's Kathryn Salemme (Acton, Mass.) mustered the win in her five-save performance. For the Seahawks, Jessie Severino (Branford, Conn.) marked the loss as she tallied six saves in the 70 minutes of play.

With the win, Worcester State advances to 1-2 on the season, while the Seahawks drop to 2-1. Despite the Seahawks' loss, they held the advantage in shots 20-15.

Next up, Worcester State travels to Western Connecticut State University for their first Little East Conference (LEC) game of the season. The game is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on Saturday (Sep. 10). The Seahawks don't resume play until Tuesday (Sep. 13) when they travel to Wheaton for a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
