Owls Snap Lancers Seven Game Winning Streak

WORCESTER, Mass.  – The Worcester State Lancers' seven-game winning streak was snapped by the visiting Keene State Owls Wednesday (Oct. 19) night under the lights at Coughlin Field on the Lancers' senior night.

With the win, the Owls remain at the top of the conference and clinch the Little East Conference (LEC) regular season title with a 15-3 overall record, and an undefeated 10-0 LEC record.  The Lancers slip to an overall 12-5 and 8-2 in the conference.

Keene State came through with two back-to-back goals in the 25th and 26th minute to pull ahead 2-0 and kept the score at that throughout the remainder of the game.

The Owls' first goal was scored on a penalty corner, when Kendal Brown (Belmont, Mass.) sent the ball in front of the goal for Sami Smith (Merrimack, N.H.) to tip the ball to teammate Brittney Cardente (N. Kingstown, R.I.) who then sunk the ball in the net for the 1-0 lead.

Just 17 seconds later, the Owls flew down the field and scored on a breakaway. Mia Brickely (Holderness, N.H.) dished the ball to Jensyn Dandeneau (Berlin, N.H.) for the 2-0 extension.

The Owls outshot the Lancers 10-3 in the first half of play, though, the Lancers attained five shots in the second in comparison to the Owls' seven for a 17-8 overall margin. Each team served up six penalty corners apiece on the evening.

Worcester State's goalkeeper, Kathryn Salemme (Acton, Mass.) recorded nine saves in the 70 minute performance, while the Owls' Gwendolyn Thayer (Hatfield, Mass.) marked her 14th win of the season, registering four stops throughout the contest.

Despite the loss, there was some happiness and cheer on the field as the Lancers' recognized their four seniors in a pregame ceremony: Meghan Pini (Natick, Mass.), Alli Baker (Somerset, Mass.), Morgan Cooper (Fitchburg, Mass.), and Kayla Quinn (Sutton, Mass.).

Next up, the Lancers travel to Westfield State for their last regular season game of the season. The Owls return to action also on Saturday when they face up against Framingham State for a 2:00 p.m. game on the Rams' turf.
