Athletic Department Announces Alexa Carlson as Head Field Hockey Coach

WORCESTER, Mass. – On Thursday, May 11th, the Worcester State University Athletic Department named Alexa Carlson the head field hockey coach. This promotion follows up on her brief stint as the interim head coach for the 2016 season.

As interim head coach, Carlson was selected the Little East Conference (LEC) Coach of the Year as she led the Lancers to 13 victories, which are the most wins for the program since they finished 13-9 in 2002. The team also claimed the 2016 MASCAC field hockey regular championship, which also was the team’s first title since 2002.

“Alexa did an outstanding job leading the Lancers to a MASCAC Championship last season and was rewarded for her efforts by being named the LEC Coach of the Year,” said Director of Athletics, Michael Mudd.  “I have no doubt she will continue to lead the team to success both on and off the field serving as the permanent head coach.”

“I would like to thank Michael Mudd for the continued opportunity to work with an exceptional group of athletes at Worcester State,” stated Carlson.  “After a successful 2016 campaign, I am humbled to be able to aid in the continued tradition of excellence Worcester State Field Hockey is known for.”

Carlson’s first year with the program was in 2015 as an assistant coach where she helped lead the Lancers to a winning record.

“These student-athletes are fantastic well-rounded young woman and I am so grateful to be able to work with them each day,” commented Carlson.  “I have high expectations for the upcoming season and am confident we will reach new heights!”

Prior to her coaching career at Worcester State, Carlson was an assistant field hockey coach at Elms College where she was instrumental in helping lead the program from a winless season to a team that competed for the conference championship.

Carlson also brings four years of playing experience to the field, as she was a four-year standout member of the Springfield College field hockey team.

Carlson, a native of New Milford, Connecticut, holds a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Health Education and also a Master’s of Education in Athletic Administration from Springfield College. She currently resides in Holden, Mass. with her husband Aaron, and is a Physical Education Teacher.
