Field Hockey Shut Out by No. 5 Babson in Season Opener, 7-0

BABSON PARK, Mass.Jacki Merrigan (Canton, Mass.) and Carla DiBiase (Winchester, Mass.) scored two goals apiece to help lead the No. 5 Babson Beavers past the Worcester State University Lancers by a score of 7-0 Friday afternoon on each team's season opener.

1ST HALF

Worcester State held the No. 5 Beavers to a nil score until 10 minutes into the first half when Babson's Ashley Tango (Reading, Mass.) setup Merrigan for her first goal of the season on a fast break.

 

Just a few minutes later, Tango registered a goal herself on a helper from Elise Towers (Ciecero, N.Y.). Babson was able to slide one more past Worcester State's senior goaltender, Kathryn Salemme (Boxborough, Mass.) with just under 10 minutes to go in the first to put the score at 3-0 at the intermission.

 

2ND HALF

Beginning in the 45th minute, the Beavers scored three goals in a 10-minute span to double Babson's lead to 6-0. Babson was able to score one more goal in the 60th minute to progress the score to 7-0, which in turn, resulted in the final score.

 

 STORY BY NUMBERS

  • Babson fired off 32 shots (19 SOG) throughout the game, while Worcester State only saw two shots (both on goal) from Michaila Parent (Westborough, Mass.) and Hayley D'Auteuil (Sutton, Mass.).
  • Babson held a 13-2 advantage on penalty corners.
  • Merrigan and DiBiase accounted for four of the Beavers' seven goals.
  • Tori Roche (Andover, Mass.) led the Beavers in the assists category with two.
  • In the net, Deidre Barry (Longmeadow, Mass.) earned the complete-game shutout, while Worcester State's Salemme suffered her first loss of the season. Despite the loss, she matched a career-high 12 saves.
  • Babson is 4-0 all-time against Worcester State, dating back to 2014.
  • In the four games played, Babson has outscored the Lancers by a 27-1 margin.
