Field Hockey Wins Fourth Straight with 7-0 Victory over Vikings

SALEM, Mass.Michaila Parent (Westborough, Mass.) scored two goals and Rachel Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) added a goal and two assists as Worcester State cruised past Salem State 7-0 in Little East Conference (LEC) field hockey action on Saturday afternoon.

1ST HALF

Despite holding a 13-1 advantage in shots in the first half, Worcester State found itself in a scoreless tie with Salem State heading into halftime. 

 

2ND HALF 

The Lancers continued to dominate possession in the second half and finally broke through in the 36th minute as Parent scored the first of three straight goals by Worcester State in just under five minutes. Jolane Thibault (Douglas, Mss.) contributed to the lead with her fifth goal of the season before Parent added her second of the game in the 41st minute to stake Worcester State to a 3-0 lead.


Hopkins added an unassisted goal before Hayley Sutherland (Tewksbury, Mass.) rifled in the Lancers' fifth goal after Worcester State's 11th corner of the game.

Sammi Souke (Sandwich, Mass.) punched in the sixth, beating goalie Gabriella Cerro (Beverly, Mass.) while Lindsay Ryan (Northbridge, Mass.) closed the scoring, adding a goal in the 65th minute to make the final 7-0 in favor of the Lancers.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Kathryn Salemme (Boxborough, Mass.) and Jenna Jenkins (Westwood, Mass.) combined for the shutout with Salemme earning the win after making two stops. 
  • Cerro made 10 saves in the loss before being replaced by Victoria Kako (Salem, Mass.), who finished with three saves.
  • Worcester State held a 20-2 advantage in shots and a 15-2 advantage in corners.
  • Parent led the Lancers in the shots category with eight (7 SOG). She is currently on a 5-game streak in points, totaling 23 (8 goals, 7 assists) in the past five games.
  • The Lancers won their fourth straight win and remain undefeated in the league.

The Lancers next host UMass Dartmouth at 7:00 on Tuesday while Salem State travels to Keene State for a 6:30 match on Wednesday.
