Parent and Sutherland Receive NFHCA Division III All-Region Laurels

NFHCA Release

WORCESTER, Mass. – Worcester State University's junior forward Michaila Parent (Westborough, Mass.) and senior back Hayley Sutherland (Tewksbury, Mass.) earned a spot on the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III All-Region First-Team, as announced by the association Wednesday (Nov. 29) afternoon.

Parent, who was named the 2017 Little East Concerned (LEC) offensive player of the year, helped the Lancers to its first LEC regular season championship in scoring program-record totals of 21 goals and 15 assists for 57 points. Her 57 points, 15 assists, and six game-winning goals were most in the league this season, while her 21 goals placed her second in the conference.

This is Sutherland's second appearance on the NFHCA All-Region team as last year she was recognized with the same laurel. Sutherland, who was named the 2017 LEC Defensive Player of the Year, anchored a defense that allowed just 10 goals over 11 regular season conference games and contributed four goals and three assists for 11 points.

Sutherland and Parent were the only LEC and Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) members represented on the New England West First-Team. Of the LEC, three field hockey players from Plymouth State and Nina Bruno of Keene State were named to the New England West Second-Team.

There were 99 student-athletes on the first team and 97 on the second team across the six regions, which included the Great Lakes, New England East, New England West, North Atlantic, South Atlantic and South. Broken down by class, the All-Region squads consisted of 93 seniors, 59 juniors, 28 sophomores and 16 freshmen.

The Longstreth/NFHCA Division III Regional Players of the Year will be announced on Thursday, with the All-America squad coming out on Dec. 6 and the National Player of the Year on Dec. 13. The six All-Region teams are listed in full below.
