Field Hockey Defeated in Overtime

WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior Maggie Redman (Alfred, Maine) scored 2:08 into overtime on Saturday afternoon as the Worcester State University field hockey team suffered a heart-breaking 2-1 loss to Southern Maine in Little East Conference action at Coughlin Field.

With the loss, the Lancers drop to 4-5 on the season and 3-2 in the LEC, while the Huskies improve to 5-4 and 3-1 in the conference.

Worcester State opened the scoring in the game's 11th minute to put the hosts ahead 1-0. Off a scramble in front of the net, senior Jessica Wilding (Somerset, Mass.) found junior Sophia Monopoli (Worcester, Mass.), who batted it into the net to put the Lancers in front. The goal was Monopoli's third of the season.

Freshman Samantha Ellis (New Vineyard, Maine) tallied the equalizer just before the half, her third goal of the season. Redman recorded an assist on the goal.

Worcester State held a majority of the possession in the second half, outshooting Southern Maine 9-0 in the half and leading them by a 7-2 margin on penalty corners. The Lancers were unable to capitalize, however, and the game headed to overtime.

On what would prove to be the only shot of the overtime period, Redman recorded her second goal of the season after deflecting a free hit from Abbie Staples (Alfred, Maine) over the head of Worcester State goalkeeper Jess Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) and into the top of the net. The goal helped snap a three-game Huskies losing streak, and dealt Worcester State its second consecutive loss.

Next up for the home-standing Lancers, they will take on Keene State on Tuesday evening, while Southern Maine travels to Fitchburg State on Wednesday for its next contest. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
