WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior defender Cassidy Windler (Holden, Mass.) tallied two goals and an assist on Thursday evening as the Worcester State University field hockey team nabbed a 5-1 win over Anna Maria in non-conference action at Coughlin Field.
With the win, the Lancers move over .500 with a record of 6-5, while the AMCats drop to 4-5 on the year.
Worcester State senior Michaila Parent (Westborough, Mass.) opened the scoring on the evening as she tallied her 11th goal of the season. Off a penalty corner, Windler played a ball into the goal mouth from the top of the circle. After deflecting up in the air off the stick of Olivia Antonelli (Westford, Mass.), Parent batted it in from over her head to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead just over nine minutes in.
In the 16th minute, Windler doubled the Lancer lead as she converted on a penalty stroke. The junior made no mistake when she stepped up to the line, burying the shot in the left corner of the net.
The Lancers converted off a penalty corner to extent their lead to three in the 21st minute. Freshman Ann Maher (Mansfield, Mass.) took the initial shot off the corner, which was denied by Anna Maria goalkeeper Nikki Streete (San Jose, Calif.), but she couldn't corral the rebound and Antonelli put home her ninth goal of the season.
Windler and junior Katelyn Santos (Acushnet, Mass.) tallied second half goals for the Lancers, with assists from Jessica Wilding (Somerset, Mass.) and Antonelli, to help them secure the victory.
Anna Maria got a 61st minute tally from Allyson Shaw (Holden, Mass.) to end the Worcester State shutout. Sophomore Chayna Bingham-Hendricks (Mashpee, Mass.) was credited with the assist on Shaw's marker.
In goal, Worcester State freshman Jess Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) was credited with the victory, making one save. Kacy Florence (Methuen, Mass.) came into the game in relief for Hopkins and recorded three saves. For the AMCats, the loss went to Streete, who made five saves. In relief, freshman Cassandra Micklesavage (Pottstown, Pa.) made four saves for the visitors.
Next up for the Lancers, they'll return to Little East Confernce play with a 4 p.m. matchup against Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday. Anna Maria plays host to Lasell College the same day at 11 a.m.
