Field Hockey Prevails in Pivotal Little East Matchup

DANBURY, Conn. - Three different Lancers found the back of the net on Tuesday evening as the Worcester State University field hockey team defeated Western Connecticut State in Little East Conference action at the Westside Athletic Conference.

Worcester State, now 8-5 overall and 6-2 in the league, raced out to a 1-0 advantage when Rachel Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) notched her fifth goal of the season at the 2:59 mark.

Nearly 14 minutes later, Michaila Parent (Norwood, Mass.) tallied her team-leading 13th goal of the season following an assist from Sarah Duff (Warren, Mass.).

The visitors would take the 2-0 advantage into halftime along with an 11-6 shot advantage over the Colonials.

Junior midfielder Jacalyn Doerwald (Washington Depot, Conn.) scored in the 40th minute for Western Connecticut. Doerwald tallied her third goal of the season after a Worcester State defender deflected her crossing pass into the back of the cage. Doerwald started the action from the penalty corner then received the return pass from Morgan Matthews (Bethel, Conn.) near the baseline.  A quick flick toward the goalmouth was enough to ricochet into the hardwood.

The Lancers added an insurance goal when Olivia Antonelli (Westford, Mass.) converted a penalty stroke with 6:17 remaining in the game.

WestConn, also 8-5 overall and now 6-3 in the LEC, received another outstanding performance by sophomore goalie Neve Manion (Newington, Conn.).  She made seven saves on the night. Worcester State's Jess Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) was credited with the victory after making six saves.

Cassidy Windler (Holden, Mass.) made a pair of defensive saves on the goal line in the first half, which easily could have allowed the Colonials to even the score heading into the break.

The Colonials, which had won six of their previous seven games, travel to Manhattanville College for a non-conference meeting with the Valiants on Thursday, October 11.  Game time is slated for 7 pm. Worcester State plays host to neighbor Clark University on Thursday, also at 7 pm.
